Augustine's Use of Sallust in the 'City of God'

The Role of the Grammatical Tradition

After 411 Augustine made increased use of Sallust, often in unattributed quotations, to illustrate the calamities that had befallen Rome throughout its history. In doing so, he drew on the prior knowledge of the more educated part of his audience.
