Notes:Defining humanism in terms of an appreciation of human beings and their happines (p.309), on the one hand, and in terms of human wholeness and human dignity (p.323) on the other, C. examines Augustine's defense of human goodness. As C. says: "Augustine asked: What are the consequences of philosophical investigations and Christian belief for the understanding of the human reality? The answers he gave consitute his Christian humanism (p.322)". Augustine separated himself from the self-sufficiency of Plotinus and Pelagius and defended a unity of theology and philosophy whereby human happiness is located in relation to Jesus Christ who reveals human potential.
