Calvin's assessment of Augustine's authority was high. He used Augustinian ideas to combat radical. Lutheran and Roman teaching on the Eucharist, and to formulate his own doctrine. In the short run the position of the Fathers of Trent on Augustine's eucharistic teaching seems to be more reasonable than Calvin's, although considered outside the limits of history Calvin's view is preferable. |
