Description
Résumé:A very large chrestomathy on the subject of free will, from the three foremost Church Fathers who polemicised on this subject. The editor's name Erynachus is considered a pseudonym of the Irish theologian J. Sinnigh (Weller 50), but the work is not mentioned in DNB. In appearance a true Elsevier, with one fleuron the same as Rahir 29, the work is not listed in the Elsevier bibliographies. The work treats in four books Pelagianism, recent Orthodox trends based on or opposing this sectarian thinking, one fundamental tenet (the naturalis potestas peccandi/vitandi peccata), and divine grace and predestination. Sinnigh (died 1666)was professor at Louvain, and as a Jansenist opposed the rulling strain of moral thinking in the Catholic Church called Probalism-this ism held that it is lawful to follow a probable opinion in favour of liberty even if an opposing view is more probable. As Probabilism was partly based on St. Augustine's writings, one might see in this work Sinnigh preparing the grounds for his later attacks as a Rigorist. Cf. Cath. Enc. XII 441-42.
