Un seul manuscrit fait connaître le Liber: Vatican, Palat. lat. 290, copié à Lorsch entre 825 et 860, dont une étude minutieuse (p.42-51), précède la nouvelle édition. Mais l'intérêt de celle-ci réside surtout dans l'identification très précise des sources utilisées par Alcuin. Comme le remarque l'éditeur (p.36) les Tractatus in Ioannem d'Augustin sont davantage cités que tout autre ouvrage patristique. On peut encore signaler (voir Index, p.106) quelques emprunts à: Enchiridion, Epist. 187 de praesentia Dei, et De Trin.
