Note:Women could be seen, and could think of themselves, as transcending something intrinsically shamefull: physical femaleness and the weakness and subordination it implied. Men were required to renounce power, or at best to interpret it as power over hostile spirits. They had to acknowledge physical malenes, which had been a manifestation of dominance and superiority, as the most persistent witness to their distance from God: the conflict between the flesh and the spirit was most sharply apparent in the bodies of men.
