Description
Summary:Excavations by a British team participating in the UNESCO Save Carthage project. The topography of the island in the radical harbor, l'Ilot de l'amirauté underwent a radical change in he 4th cent. B.C., after which there were apparently firdt timber and then stone ship-sheds and other installations associated with the Punic harbour. The Roman quaysides were found both on the island ans on the mainland, and new information obtaines about the bridge or causeway which linked the two. A reconstruction of the Roman lighthouse was attempted. The latest stage in the archaeological sequence on the island was a series of burials of the early 6th cent. A.D., North of the city wall a sequence of building, of probably 6th-early 7th cent. date, was explored. South of the city wall there are signs of a metalled berm and defencive ditch and a building on the rural or so-called Grachian centuration.
