Résumé:Discussion of ancient views of the teaching profession in the classical authors, particularly Isocrates, Quintillian, Augustine and Ausonius, in terms of the satiric view of the professor, the ideal professor of educational theory, and the image projected in the works of scoolmen and those close to the academic profession. The overall picture emerges that, with notable exceptions, the ancient professor was a disagreeable person, lacking a humane view of education.
