Description
Summary:The ninth-century Old English Martyroçlogy is based on a wide range of patristic sources. The author identifies sources for the entries concerning: the Holy Innocents (Peter Chrysologus, Sermo 152 and pseudo-Augustine, Sermo 218); the Epiphany (pseudo-Augustine, Sermo 136), Rogation Days (Cesarius of Arles, Sermones 207, 208); Christ's Descent into Hell (pseudo-Augustine, Sermo 160). Other literary sources drawn upon by the compiler include Adamnan's De locis sancti, the 'insular' De ordine creaturarum, the pseudo-Isidorean De ortu et obitu patrum and Gregory's Libri Moralium in HJob. Thes identifications enable one to appreciate both the excellence of the martyrologist's Latin and the size of his library.
