The dialectic of orality and literacy

The case of book 4 of Augustine's De doctrina christiana

This article criticizes 20th century scholarship on De doctrina christiana by contending that book 4 has often been misread through a lens that privileges written composition, so much a part of present consciousness but not necessarily applicable to Augustine's own time and rhetorical exigence.
