Zusammenfassung:This article discusses the role of St. Augustine in modern Dutch literature. In the course of the twentieth century, many eminent figures from the Christian tradition, like St. Francis of Assisi or St. Anthony, were transformed into fictionalized characters in Dutch novels or poems. St. Augustine, however, appears to have left hardly a trace in Dutch literature. Except in a few novels by postmodern writer Atte Jongstra, he has never appeared as a fictional character. Rather unexpectedly, he does turns out to serve, in the background, as a source of inspiration for the work of essayists like Kees Fens and Willem Jan Otten.
