Description
Summary:Abstract : The virginity for the kingdom of God is found well based on several texts of the New Testament. Praised consecrated Virgins are already found in the first century of the church; but it will be the third and fourth centuries when the presence of the virginity acquired great importance within the church. These virgins are granted great honor and veneration. This valor and the importance granted to the virginity pose not just a few problems within the church. Some authors praise in such a way the virginity that they manage to despise or minusvalue the marriage. Others on the contrary, they exalt in such a way the value of marriage that they get to despise the value of the virginity. In the middle of this controversy, Saint Augustine writes De santa virginitate. It is of the most important and well-balanced works that they were written about the virginity at that time. In this work the Virgin Mary holds a position of most importance. St. Augustine studies in depth the virginity and the maternity of Mary. In the mystery of the Incarnation, he presents Mary likewise as a mother and a model of the church. Mary is equally the model of the consecrated virgins. In this work, St. Augustine explains the fundamental principles of his thought on the Virgin Mary.
